On a cold March morning in 2012, I woke to the hum of my oscillating fan, a sound that usually meant the old wiring in my apartment was acting up again. I tried to sit up to check the outlet, but my body refused to move. It was as if a great weight pressed down on my chest, and each breath came in shallow, ragged gasps. My eyes were sealed shut, and when I tried to call out, my voice was a mere strangled whisper in my throat.

I could hear the fan’s blades slicing through the air, then a pause, then a click as it turned off, then a whir as it started again. This cycle repeated erratically, and with each restart, the pitch of the motor seemed to rise, becoming almost a shriek. Panic clawed at me as I lay helpless, my mind screaming for my limbs to move, but they were heavy, lifeless. Then, a new sound: a faint, wet sniffing right by my ear, like something large and reptilian inspecting me. I knew my cat, Muffin, was locked in the bathroom, and the landlord’s dog was never allowed inside.

The weight increased, crushing my ribs, and I felt a cold draft swirl around me, as if the fan was blowing directly onto my sweat-soaked skin. I tried to focus on the rhythm of the fan, to anchor myself, but it was like listening to a heartbeat that was slowing, dying. My vision flickered behind my eyelids, and I saw glimpses of a dark, elongated figure standing at the foot of my bed, its head tilted as if listening to my frantic thoughts.

Finally, after what felt like hours, my eyes snapped open. The fan was still, the room silent. I scrambled out of bed, clutching the blanket, and burst into the living room where my roommate, Jenna, was watching TV. I was shaking, tears streaming down my face, and I could barely choke out what had happened. Jenna, ever the skeptic, laughed it off as sleep paralysis, telling me to drink some water and go back to bed.

But I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. The air in my room felt thick, and the fan seemed to be watching me. I decided to search online for ‘sleep paralysis with fan sounds’, and I stumbled upon a forum post about a series of deaths in the area, all occurring in apartments with the same model of ceiling fan. The post claimed that the fans were haunted, that they fed on fear, and that they would turn on and off to trap their victims in a state of terror until their hearts gave out.

I dismissed it as an urban legend, but that night, as I lay in bed, the fan started its erratic dance again. This time, I felt a presence in the room, and I knew I wasn’t alone. The sniffing sound returned, louder, more insistent, and I could feel something cold and wet brush against my cheek. I tried to scream, but my voice was gone. The fan’s blades spun faster, and the room grew darker, and I felt myself fading, my consciousness slipping away.

In the morning, Jenna found me dead, my face frozen in terror, the ceiling fan spinning silently above me, its blades coated in a fine layer of dust that seemed to spell out a single word: ‘Mine’.
