It started when I rearranged the bedroom I shared with my younger brother, Leo. We lived in a ground-floor apartment with a musty carpet that always felt slightly damp, no matter how often we vacuumed. I’d moved my bed from the wall opposite the door to the wall adjacent to his, leaving a narrow gap between us. That night, as I lay drifting off, I heard a sound like a tiny clock, ticking irregularly, as if something was crawling over a hard surface. It grew louder, more insistent, and I sat up to see a line of enormous insects marching along the top of the doorframe. They were the size of my palm, with glossy black carapaces and long, twitching antennae. Their legs made that ticking sound against the wood.

I whispered to Leo, ‘Do you see those?’ He was already staring at them, his eyes wide. ‘Yeah,’ he said. ‘What are they?’ We called for Mom, but she didn’t hear us at first. The insects moved in a slow, deliberate line, each one pausing at the corner of the frame as if counting something. They seemed to be studying the room, and I felt a chill that had nothing to do with the temperature. When Mom finally pushed the door open, the overhead light flooded the room, and the insects faded like smoke. They didn’t scurry away; they just became translucent and then vanished, leaving only a faint, greasy spot on the doorframe.

Mom brushed it off as a freak of the light. ‘Probably just a reflection,’ she said. But Leo and I knew what we’d seen. For the next week, I noticed that the carpet in our room seemed to have a pattern I’d never noticed before: a subtle, darker weave that formed a spiral, with the center right where my bed had been originally. I tried to vacuum it away, but it stayed. When I moved a heavy dresser to clean underneath, I found a small, circular trapdoor in the floor, hidden under the carpet. It was sealed with a rusty latch that looked old-fashioned, like something out of a ship.

Curiosity got the better of me. One afternoon, while Leo was at school and Mom was at work, I pried it open. A cold, musty draft rushed out, and I saw a narrow, stone-lined shaft descending into darkness. There was a metal ladder bolted to the side. I called down, ‘Hello?’ My voice echoed back, but something else answered: a low, rhythmic ticking, like the insects, but slower and heavier. It seemed to be coming from far below. I decided to climb down.

The ladder went on for what felt like a hundred feet, then opened into a small, brick-lined room. The walls were covered in strange, faintly glowing symbols, and in the center stood a pedestal with a large, spherical object made of what looked like black glass. It pulsed with a faint, sickly light, and the ticking sound was coming from inside it. As I approached, I felt a pressure in my ears, and the symbols on the walls began to writhe, as if they were alive. I knew I shouldn’t touch it, but something compelled me. I reached out and placed my palm on the cold, smooth surface.

The ticking stopped. The sphere began to hum, and the symbols on the walls flared brightly. I felt a surge of energy, and I saw visions: a woman in old-fashioned clothes, laying the sphere in this very room, sealing the trapdoor, and whispering a warning. Then I saw the insects, thousands of them, crawling out of the walls, covering her, and the sphere turning dark. I pulled my hand away, and the vision ended. The sphere now felt warm, and I realized with horror that my touch had activated something. The ticking resumed, but now it was faster, more urgent.

I scrambled up the ladder, my heart pounding. I slammed the trapdoor shut and yanked the carpet back into place, but I knew it was too late. That night, the insects returned, but not just above the door. They were on the walls, the ceiling, the floor, moving in a synchronized wave toward my bed. Leo screamed, and Mom ran in, but this time they didn’t fade. They swarmed over Mom, over Leo, over me, covering us in a living, ticking blanket. I felt their legs probing, their mandibles biting, and then everything went black.

I woke up in a hospital bed. Mom and Leo were in the beds next to me, covered in bandages, but alive. The doctors said we’d been found in our apartment, covered in strange bite marks, but no insects were found. The carpet was gone; the floor was bare concrete. The trapdoor was welded shut. I haven’t told anyone about the sphere, but sometimes, when I lie still at night, I can still hear it ticking, deep below, waiting for someone else to find it.
