I’ve always been a light sleeper, but last night was different. A dull, persistent ache throbbed behind my eyes, a migraine that refused to relent. I tried everything – reading, scrolling through my phone, even a warm glass of milk. Nothing worked. The pain kept me tethered to the waking world, a prisoner in my own skull. Finally, at 3:27 AM, I felt the exhaustion win. I crawled into bed, but instead of my usual curled-up position, I lay flat on my back, staring at the ceiling. It felt strange, wrong, but I was too tired to care.

As I drifted in and out of consciousness, I fell into a bizarre dream. I was in a tiny, dusty village, like something out of a medieval painting, but everything was wrong. The houses were crooked, the windows were empty holes, and the streets were littered with bones. And the inhabitants – they weren’t human. They were small, twisted creatures with sharp teeth and glowing red eyes, hopping and dancing in a circle around a gnarled bonfire. They chanted in a language I couldn’t understand, their voices like scraping metal. I tried to run, but my feet were glued to the ground. One of them turned its head, locking eyes with me, and grinned.

I woke with a jolt, my heart pounding. But I couldn’t move. My body was frozen, pinned to the mattress as if by an invisible force. My eyes were open, but all I could see was the dim glow of my alarm clock. Then I heard it: a rhythmic, abrasive sound, like something dragging against the carpet. Scrubbing. Scrubbing. Scrubbing. It was coming from the foot of my bed, from the floor. My first thought was that my dog was scratching at the rug, but she sleeps in the living room. My second thought was a burglar, but the sound was too uniform, too deliberate.

The sound grew louder, more insistent. I tried to scream, but my throat was frozen. I tried to move my arms, my legs, but they were dead weights. The only thing that moved were my feet – I could feel my toes twitching under the covers, desperately trying to gain traction. I focused every ounce of energy on my legs, begging them to respond. And slowly, painfully, I managed to wiggle my feet, then my ankles, then my knees. The scrubbing stopped. A breath of silence, heavy and expectant.

Then it started again, faster, more frantic. I felt a cold breeze wash over my bare feet as the blanket slipped away. I yanked my knees up, finally breaking free of the paralysis, and lunged upward. I fumbled for the lamp, my fingers shaking, and clicked it on. The light flooded the room, revealing nothing. The carpet was smooth, unmarred. Not a single tuft out of place. But there, at the foot of the bed, was a dark stain, about the size of a dinner plate, soaked into the fibers. It smelled like rust and copper.

I haven’t slept since. I checked the room thoroughly – under the bed, in the closet, behind the curtains. Nothing. But as I sit here, writing this, the feeling remains. I can still hear that scrubbing sound, faint, like it’s coming from under the floorboards. And I swear, when I look at the stain, it’s a little darker than before. I’m afraid to close my eyes. Because I know what made that sound. And I know it’s still here, waiting for me to sleep again.
