Elara inherited her grandmother’s sprawling Victorian home on the outskirts of Oakhaven, a town that prided itself on its eerie, perpetual twilight. The house, a labyrinth of dusty rooms and creaking floorboards, had always held a certain melancholic charm, but it was the locked door at the end of the third-floor corridor that truly piqued her curiosity. Her grandmother, a woman of quiet habits and even quieter secrets, had always forbidden Elara from going near it. The key, a tarnished brass piece shaped like a tiny hand, was kept on a silken cord around her neck, a constant, unsettling weight.

Months after settling in, Elara began noticing peculiar things. Tools she distinctly remembered putting away would reappear on her workbench, covered in a fine, wood-scented dust. The faint aroma of freshly cut pine would drift from the sealed third-floor room, even when all the windows were shut tight. Then came the sounds – a rhythmic tapping, like a chisel against wood, emanating from the very heart of the house, always at the dead of night. She tried to dismiss it as the old house settling, the wind playing tricks, but the distinct pattern, the deliberate rhythm, gnawed at her.

One stormy evening, the tapping grew more insistent, more desperate. It was no longer a subtle intrusion but a frantic, insistent drumming. Driven by a gnawing dread, Elara clutched the brass key. It felt unnaturally warm against her skin. She ascended the grand staircase, each step groaning a protest, until she stood before the forbidden door. The tapping seemed to vibrate through the wood itself. Taking a deep, shuddering breath, she inserted the key. The lock turned with a soft click, far too smooth for an ancient mechanism.

The room was small, a forgotten carpenter’s workshop. The air was thick with the scent of aged wood and something else… something metallic and foul. In the center of the room, illuminated by the single beam of her flashlight, stood an unfinished wooden doll, its limbs crudely carved, its eyes hollow sockets. Beside it lay a set of antique woodworking tools, each glinting with a faint, wet sheen. As Elara’s light swept across the floor, she saw them – dozens, perhaps hundreds, of tiny, perfectly formed wooden hands scattered around the workbench, each one eerily similar to the key she held. The tapping stopped abruptly. A dry, rasping sound, like sandpaper on bone, filled the silence. From the deepest shadows of the workshop, two pinpricks of light, reflecting the beam of her flashlight, blinked open.
