I was six when we moved to the old farmhouse on Morrow Road, a place where the fields stretched like tired shadows under a bruised sky. My room was at the end of a crooked hallway, its walls peeling with floral wallpaper that seemed to breathe. I had a nightlight, a spinning carousel of painted horses that cast a soft, blue glow across my ceiling. On my dresser sat my collection of porcelain dolls, each with glassy eyes that followed me, their painted smiles stiff and eternal. I’d had them for as long as I could remember, but that night, they felt different.

That day had been off from the start. The air was heavy, and an unshakable dread clung to me like a wet coat. My mother said I was just tired, but I knew better. Something was waiting. As twilight settled, a low hum vibrated through the floorboards, and the carousel’s light flickered, the horses’ painted eyes seeming to roll. I tried to tell my mom, but she dismissed it as my imagination. I went to bed early, and the last thing I saw was the carousel spinning, its horses frozen in mid-gallop, their eyes fixed on me.

I woke at exactly 3:03 AM, according to the glowing clock on my nightstand. My mouth was stretched open in a silent scream, my hands pressed together as if in prayer, my eyes wide and burning. I couldn’t move. Something heavy pressed down on my chest, and my room was bathed in a sickly crimson light that pulsed like a heartbeat. The carousel spun faster, its mechanical lullaby now a distorted, grinding refrain. Then I heard it—a chorus of tiny, high-pitched voices, all speaking in unison. My dolls were turned toward me, their porcelain heads tilted, their painted eyes glinting with a malevolent life.

‘You’ve been so good,’ they said, their voices like shattered glass. ‘We’ve been waiting for you to join us.’ Each doll moved, their stiff joints cracking as they rose from the dresser, floating in the red haze. The carousel’s music swelled, and I watched in terror as the horses on the carousel began to bleed, their eyes turning from glass to something wet and new. The lead doll, a girl with cracked porcelain cheeks, drifted to my bedside. ‘You’ve always loved us, haven’t you? So we’ll keep you forever. Just like the others.’

I tried to scream, but my mouth was locked. The pressure on my chest grew, and I felt my body begin to stiffen, my skin turning cold and hard. The dolls swarmed me, their tiny fingers tracing patterns on my face, and the carousel’s light spun faster, the blue light now a bloody cyclone. I saw flashes of other children—their faces frozen in terror, their eyes empty—caught in the carousel’s gears, their souls trapped. The dolls began to sing a nursery rhyme I didn’t recognize, but I understood every word: ‘Round and round, the carousel spins, forever you’ll stay, with your porcelain skin.’

As the first light of dawn bled through the window, the red haze faded, and the pressure lifted. I could move again. I scrambled out of bed, but when I looked in the mirror, my reflection was wrong. My eyes were glassy, and tiny cracks were forming on my cheeks. I turned to the dresser, but the dolls were back in place, smiling. However, there was one new doll among them—a little girl with the same face as mine, frozen in a silent scream. The carousel spun lazily, its light now a soft, innocent blue, but I knew I was never truly free. They were waiting for the next child to join their eternal ride.

I never spoke of it again, but every night, I feel the cold pressure on my chest, and I hear the faint melody of the carousel, calling me back. And when I look at my face in the mirror, I see the cracks spreading, and I know that soon, I’ll be one of them, trapped on that carousel of eyes, spinning forever in a room painted red.
