The Cairn Bed

Maeve and I booked the Old Steward’s Lodge for our anniversary, a crumbling granite pile on the edge of a mist-soaked moor in the Scottish Highlands. The website promised authenticity, creaking floors, and a peat-fire hearth, but it failed to mention the chill that seemed to seep from the stone itself, or the way the wind moaned through the eaves like a forgotten lament. We arrived late, the sky a bruised purple, and the lodge’s single lit window glowed like a jaundiced eye. The owner, a stooped woman with iron-grey hair and a gaze that lingered too long, handed us a heavy iron key and said, ‘Mind the cairn bed.’ I assumed it was a local term for the master bedroom, but Maeve, who had been quiet since we crossed the bridge, clutched my arm.

The bed itself was a monstrosity, carved from black oak, its headboard a tangle of roots and thorns. The mattress was lumpy, and the blankets smelled of dust and old smoke. We laughed about it, trying to shake the unease, and by midnight we were exhausted from the drive from Glasgow. We drifted off, Maeve’s hand in mine. I woke to a weight on my chest, a pressure like a stone pressed against my sternum. The room was darker than it should have been, the moon outside hidden by clouds. I could not move, not even my fingers. My eyes adjusted, and there—by the window, in a high-backed chair that had not been there before—sat a figure. A man, his head bowed, his hands resting on his knees. He was made of shadow, but I could see the outline of his shoulders, the tilt of his skull. A cold sweat broke on my brow. I tried to call out to Maeve, but my throat was sealed. The figure shifted, and a pale face turned toward me, featureless, yet somehow smiling. Then I saw it: a mist, thin and grey, curling from the floor on the right side of the bed. It rose, wrapping around the bedpost, and I felt a breath on my neck, cold and smelling of earth.

I do not know how long I lay there, frozen, while the mist pulsed like a living thing. Maeve slept, oblivious, her breathing soft and even. I forced my eyes closed, and when I opened them again, the figure was gone, but the mist remained, hovering at the foot of the bed. I felt a weight shift on the mattress, as if someone had sat down. Then a whisper, not in my ear, but inside my skull: ‘You are in my bed.’ I tried to scream, and the sound that came out was a thin whimper. Maeve stirred and murmured, ‘Go back to sleep.’ I did not sleep.

At first light, the mist had retreated to the corner, and the chair was empty, but I saw it clearly: the chair was an antique, tufted velvet, but it was covered in a fine dust, as if it had not been sat in for years. I woke Maeve and told her everything. She looked at me, her face pale, and said, ‘I dreamed something too. I dreamed I was buried, and I heard someone knocking on the lid.’ We did not speak of it again, but we dressed quickly and left, the owner watching us from the window. As we drove away, I saw her smile, and she raised a hand, not in farewell, but as if to wave me back.

I have since learned that the lodge was built on the site of an old cairn, a Bronze Age burial mound. The bed, they say, was brought from the laird’s house, and he was buried in it, according to his wishes. They never found his wife. Some mornings, the housekeeper would find the bed unmade, and the chair pulled closer to the window. I do not know why we were chosen, but I know this: that night, I felt a presence, and I saw a shape, and I heard a voice. I will never forget the smell of earth, or the weight on my chest. And I will never again sleep in a bed that has a name.
