The Boy by the Pool

The old house came with a beautiful garden and a large pond. My cousin and I were wading in the shallow water one afternoon when I noticed a child watching from behind the willow tree. I have no sons, only daughters. I kept the sighting to myself.

A month later, my neighbors visited for tea. One of them, who often spoke of sensing energies, suddenly pointed toward the garden shed. Both women claimed to see a young boy dart behind it. Curious, we investigated the small outbuilding.

Inside sat an old radio, unplugged and covered in dust. As we stood there, it crackled to life with faint, staticky music. Then we heard a child’s sob, clear and mournful. I’ve tried calling out to him, offering comfort, but he remains silent. His presence feels heavy with sorrow. I wish I knew how to ease his sadness.
