Mara had always found the old farmhouse charming, with its creaking floors and the way the wind sang through the gaps in the window frames. But tonight, as she lay on the four-poster bed in the guest room, the charm felt like a thin veil over something else. She had kicked off her heavy work boots an hour ago, leaving them by the door, and was drifting in that liminal state between wake and sleep. The window was open, and a cool breeze played across her bare feet, which hung off the edge of the mattress. It was a pleasant sensation, until she realized that the breeze was not moving the way a breeze should. It was localized, teasing, almost like fingers.

She opened her eyes, and in the dim light of the moon, she saw nothing. But the sensation persisted—soft, deliberate strokes against the soles of her feet. She tried to pull them back, but an unseen force held her ankles gently, firmly. The touch moved up, to her ankles, then to her calves, kneading the muscle as if trying to reassure her. Mara’s breath caught. This was not a draft; it was hands. She could feel each finger, the pressure of palms, the faint warmth of skin that was not human. And then, the bed began to tremble, a rhythmic thudding, as if something was hitting the base of the frame from below.

She sat up, her heart pounding. The room was empty, but the air felt charged, as if a third presence was breathing with her. The thudding continued, then ceased. She swung her legs off the bed, her feet touching the cold wooden floor. That’s when she saw them: her boots, which she had left by the door, were now neatly placed at the foot of the bed, side by side, as if waiting for her to put them on. But they were not empty. Inside each boot, a shape pressed against the leather, not quite visible, but unmistakably there. And as she reached out to touch them, a voice, soft and sibilant, whispered from the space above her bed, ‘You should have kept them on, Mara. Now I can feel where you’ve been.’

The boots began to move, shifting slightly, as if the invisible feet inside them were testing their fit. Mara backed away, but the voice continued, ‘I’ve been waiting for you to take them off. I’ve been waiting to walk in your steps.’ The room grew colder, and the moonlight seemed to dim, as if something was blocking the window. She looked at her bare feet, and for the first time, she noticed that her footprints, which should have been visible in the dust on the floor, were not there. Instead, there was a second set of prints, leading from the door to the bed—prints that were larger than her own, and they were fresh.

She ran to the door, but it slammed shut. The boots between her and the threshold began to fill, the leather bulging as if a pair of legs were sliding into them. The voice laughed, a sound like dry leaves scraping against stone. ‘You’ve carried me all day, Mara. Every step you took, I was there, waiting for you to give me form. Now, I’ll take them for myself.’ She saw the boots stand up, empty but upright, and they took a step toward her. And then another. And with each step, the prints on the floor deepened, and she felt a weight settling on her chest, as if something was climbing into her skin.

She woke up with a gasp, her heart racing. She was on the bed, fully clothed, her boots still on. The window was closed, and the room was silent. She laughed nervously, rubbing her face. A dream, just a dream. But then she noticed the dust on the floor. There, leading from the door to the bed, were two sets of footprints. One was hers, with the tread of her boots. The other was barefoot, and it was not hers. And as she watched, the barefoot prints began to move, sliding across the floor toward her, and she realized that she was still dreaming, or worse, that she had never woken up at all.

The boots on her feet grew warm, then hot. They began to move without her consent, carrying her toward the door. She tried to stop, but her legs were not her own. The voice returned, now from inside her own throat, ‘Don’t worry, Mara. We’ll find you a new pair of boots to fill.’ And as she stepped out of the house into the moonlit night, she knew she was not walking for herself anymore. She was just a vehicle, a pair of feet for something that had been waiting for years to walk again. And somewhere behind her, in the empty guest room, her own bare feet remained on the floor, cold and still, as the door clicked shut.
