The day we moved into the old farmhouse, I was thrilled to claim the largest bedroom at the end of the hall. It had a huge bay window overlooking the overgrown meadow, and the walls were freshly painted a pale green. But from the first night, I felt a strange pressure in the air, a sense of being watched that made my skin crawl. My eyes would drift, almost instinctively, to the closet door, which was always slightly ajar no matter how many times I closed it.

My mother dismissed it as moving jitters, but the feeling only intensified. I’d wake up at odd hours, convinced I heard shuffling from inside the closet, but when I looked, nothing was there. After six months, I couldn’t take it anymore. I moved into my little sister’s room, and eventually, my mother ordered me to return to my own room, with my sister as company. Her old room became a guest room for visiting relatives.

Despite my sister’s presence, the oppressive gaze remained. I started noticing fine cracks in the closet’s back panel, almost like a hidden seam. One afternoon, I pushed aside my clothes and traced the seam with my fingers. A small square of wood gave way, revealing a dark, narrow passage that smelled of damp earth and something metallic. I fetched a flashlight and crawled in, my heart pounding.

The passage led to a small, hidden room, no larger than a pantry. The walls were lined with shelves of dusty, glass jars, each containing a desiccated, dark shape. The air was cold and stale. There was a single, child-sized stool in the center, and on the floor, a scattering of faded, Polaroid photographs. They showed a young girl with braided hair, always facing away from the camera, standing in this very room. On the back of one photo, written in shaky pencil, were the words: ‘She needs new eyes to see the truth.’

I backed out, my breath hitching. I didn’t tell my family, but I boarded up the passage with old wood from the barn. That night, I lay in bed, my sister asleep beside me, and I heard a faint scraping from inside the closet. Then a whisper, not in my ear, but inside my skull: ‘Let me look again.’ In the morning, I found the boards splintered on the floor and the closet door wide open. A single Polaroid lay on my pillow, the same girl, but now she was turning around. Her face was a hollow, black void, and from that void, a pair of unblinking, milky eyes stared directly at me. On the back, one word: ‘Finally.’
