My uncle used to tell me this story, and I always believed every word of it. It happened in the autumn of 1987, in a creaky Victorian house on the outskirts of a small town in Ohio. My uncle, Jake, was sixteen, and his best friend, Danny, had come over for a sleepover.

The house was old and full of drafts, and that night was unseasonably cold. They had spent the day exploring the attic, where they found an old trunk filled with moth-eaten clothes and a dusty photograph of a stern-looking woman with light gray hair. Jake’s grandmother had told him that the woman was his great-great-grandmother, who had died in that very house, in the room they were about to sleep in.

That night, after a dinner of chili and cornbread, they settled into the guest bedroom. The room had a high ceiling and a single window that rattled in the wind. They lay on the big, four-poster bed, talking in whispers, the only light coming from a dim lamp on the nightstand.

Jake began to shiver. ‘Man, it’s freezing in here,’ he said, pulling the thin quilt up to his chin. Danny laughed. ‘You’re such a wimp. It’s not that cold.’ But Jake couldn’t shake the chill. It felt like the cold was coming from inside the room, not from outside.

Just as he said that, a figure emerged from the corner of the room, where the shadows pooled. It was an old woman, dressed in a faded floral nightgown, with light gray hair pulled back in a bun. She was carrying a thick, knitted blanket, and she walked toward the bed with a slow, shuffling gait.

Jake’s blood ran cold. He recognized her from the photograph in the attic. It was his great-great-grandmother. She walked right up to the side of the bed, and Jake could see her eyes through the gaps in the blanket she held up to her face. Her eyes were dark and deep, like wells, and they seemed to see right through him.

She didn’t say a word. She just lifted the blanket and let it float down over them. Jake felt a weight settle on his body, as if a heavy, ice-cold sheet had been laid over them. But then, just as quickly, it vanished, like smoke dissipating in the air.

Jake blinked, and she was gone. Danny was staring at him, wide-eyed. ‘Did you see that?’ he whispered. Jake nodded, his heart pounding. They both lay there, frozen, for a long time. Neither of them slept that night.

When morning came, they told Jake’s grandmother about what they had seen. She went pale and said, ‘You saw her. She used to do that when I was a girl. She would always come and cover us with a blanket when we were cold. But she died in that bed, and after that, we moved to a different room.’

Jake and Danny never spoke of it again, but Jake would never forget the feeling of that blanket, so soft and yet so cold. And he would never forget the look in her eyes, as if she were trying to protect him from something that was already there, something they couldn’t see.
