The old lighthouse keeper, Silas, had seen many strange things over his fifty years tending the Beacon of Blackrock Point. Storms that clawed at the very stone of the tower, ships that sailed into impossible fogbanks and never returned, and skies that bled with colors no natural phenomenon could explain. But nothing prepared him for the vision that appeared on a Tuesday afternoon, under a sky that was an unsettling shade of bruised plum.

He was polishing the immense Fresnel lens, its multifaceted surfaces reflecting the meager sunlight, when a shape detached itself from the hazy horizon. It was vast, impossibly so, a colossal avian form silhouetted against the lurid sky. Not a bird, not a plane, but something that defied earthly classification. Its wings, wider than any cathedral nave, were not feathered but seemed to be made of solidified, shimmering light, an ethereal alabaster that hurt Silas’s eyes. Along the leading edge of these impossible appendages, stark alphanumeric symbols, the color of a midnight sky, pulsed with a faint, internal luminescence. Silas squinted, trying to decipher them, but they swam before his vision, an alien script that refused to resolve.

Down on the rocky shore, a handful of tourists, oblivious, picnicked amongst the salt-sprayed boulders. Silas watched, his gut twisting, as figures within the colossal entity became discernible. A child, no older than seven, pressed its small face against an invisible barrier, its hand raised as if in greeting to the unaware world below. Beside it, a man, his face etched with an unnerving placidity, appeared engrossed in a broadsheet, its pages a stark white against the unearthly glow of the craft. It was the utter indifference of the world below that chilled Silas more than the apparition itself. They saw nothing. They heard nothing. Only he, the solitary sentinel of the light, bore witness to this silent, celestial intrusion.

Suddenly, the blare of a foghorn from a small fishing trawler, laboring against the gentle swell, shattered the surreal tableau. The horn sounded repeatedly, a frantic, insistent warning. Silas gestured wildly towards the sky, his mouth opening to shout, but no sound emerged. The trawler edged closer, its horn still bellowing, an impatient, earthly demand for passage that was utterly out of sync with the cosmic event unfolding above. Silas realized with a sickening lurch that he was the only barrier, the only one whose attention was diverted from the mundane demands of the sea by the impossible sight hanging impossibly still above the churning grey water. The trawler’s horn continued, a frantic pulse against the profound, terrifying silence of the winged enigma.
