Maren and her husband, Elias, bought the old Ashford house from her great-uncle, a reclusive antique dealer who had let the place fall into disrepair. The house sat on a hill overlooking the town of Grayhaven, its Victorian bones groaning under decades of neglect. They had planned to restore it, to fill its dusty rooms with their own memories, but from the very first week, the house seemed to resist.

It began subtly: a faint tapping from within the walls, like a fingernail against wood. Then doors would swing shut with a gentle click, as if a draft had caught them, though the windows were sealed tight. Light bulbs flickered in rhythm, and sometimes Maren caught the faint murmur of conversation in empty rooms, words she couldn’t quite make out.

At first, they dismissed it as the settling of an old house, the wind through the eaves. But their children, six-year-old Owen and four-year-old Tessa, grew pale and clingy. Tessa started talking about a ‘lady in the attic’ who watched her from the shadows. Owen refused to go upstairs alone. Friends stopped coming over, their parents making excuses after hearing the children’s fearful stories. Maren and Elias did their best to ignore it, chalking it up to their children’s overactive imaginations.

In 2007, Elias’s company transferred him to a new position across the country, and they decided to sell the house. Their eldest son, Liam, a junior in college, offered to stay behind and keep an eye on it until it sold. Two weeks after they moved, Liam called, his voice tight with anxiety. ‘Mom, something is wrong,’ he said. ‘Last night, around four in the morning, I woke up to the sound of someone flipping through pages, like a book. And there was this smell, like dust and old paper, so strong I could taste it. And the knocking, it’s constant now, coming from every room at once. I can’t sleep. I feel like I’m being watched.’

Maren tried to calm him, telling him it was just the old house settling, but his words sent a chill down her spine. She remembered a dusty ledger she had found in the attic when they first moved in, filled with strange symbols and dates, the name ‘Ashworth’ written on the first page. She had never thought much of it, but now she wondered if it was connected. She told Liam to look for it, to see if it might contain something useful.

A few days later, Liam called again, his voice shaking. ‘I found the ledger,’ he said. ‘It’s locked, and the key is missing, but I can see through the cracks. There are entries for every day for the last hundred years, but the last entry is dated next week. And the date is circled. I think it’s an auction date. There’s a list of items, but they’re not antiques. They’re things like ‘the first-born’s lullaby’ and ‘the memory of a childhood fear.’ I’m scared, Mom. I don’t know what this house is.’

Maren flew back immediately, leaving Elias and the kids behind. She arrived to find Liam haggard, dark circles under his eyes, the house feeling colder than the outside air. They tried to leave together, but every time they approached the front door, it would slam shut, as if held by an unseen force. The knocking grew into a frantic pounding, and the faint voices she had once dismissed were now clear, pleading whispers that sounded like her great-uncle’s voice, begging them to ‘finish the sale.’

In the attic, they pried open the ledger. The symbols writhed on the page, for a moment appearing as letters, forming a cruel smile. The next day’s entry read: ‘The silence of the Ashford children, sold to the highest bidder.’ Maren realized with horror that the house was not merely haunted; it was a broker of souls, and they were the inventory.

The auction is set for the next full moon. Maren and Liam are trapped inside, their children’s laughter echoing from the walls, and her great-uncle’s spirit is the auctioneer, ready to sell their family’s most precious fear to the highest bidder in the dark beyond. And all they can do is wait for the hammer to fall.
