This happened during my mother’s wake in April 2018. My husband and I were busy sorting out the paperwork for her burial, so we asked his dad (my father-in-law) and his cousin to stay at the wake and watch over everything while we were away.

When we got back that afternoon, they told us something that gave us chills.

They said they saw an old woman standing across the street, holding a long umbrella that she also used as a cane. She was staring straight at my mom’s white coffin through the glass, almost as if she was trying to figure out if she was in the right place or if she knew the person inside.

After a few minutes, she slowly crossed the street and walked towards them. They weren’t sure why, but they just stood there, watching her.

When she entered the wake, she walked straight to the coffin and stared at my mom for about a minute. Then, without saying a word, she placed five 1-peso coins on the podium where the guestbook was, turned around, and left.

My father-in-law and my husband’s cousin described her appearance in detail, and as I listened, something clicked in my mind. I suddenly remembered someone who looked just like that.

I quickly found an old photo of my mother with her family—her two siblings and their mother. When I showed the picture to them, they both froze. They were speechless.

The old woman they saw at the wake was the same woman in the photo—my grandmother, who had passed away back in the 1980s.

That meant my grandmother, who had been gone for decades, had come back to visit my mother one last time.
