This is a story my friend told me. Last November, my friend, Jake, decided to take his dog, Max, on a road trip to visit some old friends. It was getting late when they started heading back home, and the night was pitch black. Max had been quiet the entire trip, lying peacefully in the backseat.
As they drove through the countryside, Jake turned up the radio to keep himself alert. They were approaching a small town called Pineville, known for its eerie, old-fashioned charm. The streets were deserted, and the only light came from Jake’s headlights. If you’re familiar with Pineville, you’d know there’s an old, abandoned church with a graveyard right next to it.
The darkness around them was almost suffocating. Suddenly, Jake felt a chill run down his spine, and the hairs on the back of his neck stood up. Max began to growl, a low, menacing sound that sent shivers down Jake’s spine. He told Max to calm down, but the dog continued to growl, his eyes fixed on something in the backseat.
Jake glanced in the rearview mirror and saw a shadowy figure sitting in the back. He blinked, thinking it was a trick of the light, but the figure remained. Max was now barking furiously, his teeth bared at the apparition.
The figure, as Jake described it later, was darker than the night itself. It seemed to absorb the light around it, creating an unsettling void. When Jake looked closer, he realized the figure resembled a young girl, about the age of his niece.
Terrified, Jake pulled over to the side of the road, his heart pounding. He turned around to confront the figure, but it had vanished. Max stopped barking and whimpered, curling up in the backseat. Jake quickly drove away, not daring to look back.
To this day, Jake swears he saw a ghost that night. He avoids Pineville whenever he can, and Max never quite recovered from the encounter. Some say the ghost of a young girl haunts the old church, waiting for someone to notice her.
