It had been some time since I moved from my old apartment, hoping to leave behind the strange shadows I used to see. Now, I live in a quiet house with three bedrooms, all connected by a single hallway. When we first arrived, the place felt peaceful—no strange feelings, no sudden fear when turning off the lights. But soon, the shadows returned.

The first time it happened was about a month after we settled in. My bed is against a wall, and I sleep on the side closest to the room. A small, round lamp sits on the nightstand beside me. One night, around three in the morning, I woke up and glanced at the lamp. In the dim light from outside, I saw something move. It looked like a snake, curled around the lamp’s base, slowly slithering out of view. I jumped up and turned on the light—nothing was there. The image had been so clear, so real, that my skin crawled for hours afterward.

Not long after, I had another unsettling experience. In the past, I had sometimes woken up to the feeling of my bed shaking, always assuming it was just my imagination. But once, years ago, I learned that there had actually been an earthquake, so now, I always check carefully when it happens. A few months ago, the shaking returned. I lay still, listening carefully, and then I heard voices—two deep male voices whispering just outside my door. Their tones were too low to understand, almost as if they knew I was listening and didn’t want me to hear them. The moment I turned on the lamp, the voices vanished, and everything fell silent. My husband was fast asleep beside me, and no one else lived with us.

Another time, during the summer, I woke up on my back and saw something strange. A huge wasp or hornet was bouncing off the ceiling. At first, it seemed normal—it was summer, after all. But as I watched, the insect moved in an unnatural way, as if it were flickering in and out of existence. I turned on the light, ready to run, but when I looked back, there was nothing there. I searched everywhere, but no bug could be found.

The most disturbing thing happened just a few weeks ago. Once again, it was a snake. This time, when I woke up, I saw it caught between my closet’s sliding doors, its long body sticking out horizontally, as if floating in the air. It moved and hissed, but its tail remained stuck in place. My mind couldn’t understand what I was seeing. As soon as I turned on the light, it was gone.

I often wonder if these things are just dreams slipping into reality or if I’m truly haunted by creatures that terrify me most. Whatever the answer, the shadows have not left me.
