In a quiet suburban house, late one autumn night, Raj was recovering from a painful leg injury. He had to sleep in an awkward position to avoid disturbing the stitches on his leg. The discomfort kept him up, and he found himself wide awake on the living room sofa. The room was dimly lit by the glow of the TV, casting eerie shadows on the walls. Raj watched a muted horror movie, trying to distract himself from the pain.

Suddenly, he heard a creak. It sounded like it came from the hallway just outside his bedroom. Confused, he remembered that their hardwood floor didn’t usually make any noise. Curious and slightly alarmed, he strained to listen. The creaks continued, deliberate and heavy, as if someone or something invisible was making its way down the hall.

The sound grew louder, closer. Raj’s heart pounded. With each creak, he felt a chill creeping up his spine. He counted the steps: one, two, three, four… and then the creaking stopped. In the dim light, he saw a shadow pass by the TV. It wasn’t his wife—she was sound asleep in their room.

The shadow moved with purpose, making its way to the other side of the sofa where Raj sat. He could feel the presence, a cold, heavy sensation, pressing on his chest. His breath hitched as he felt it behind him. He turned his head, expecting to see something—or someone—standing there. But there was nothing.

Sweat dripped down Raj’s face. He felt the presence linger for a moment before it moved away silently. It was as if the ghostly intruder had vanished into thin air. Raj was left in silence, the room filled only with the flickering light of the TV.

The next morning, he told his wife about the eerie encounter. She suggested it might have been the painkillers messing with his mind. But Raj knew better—he had stopped taking them days ago. He was wide awake, fully aware, and utterly terrified. It wasn’t the first time they had experienced something strange in that house, but it was by far the most unnerving.
