When I was around thirteen, something unusual happened that has always stayed with me. That morning, a gentle old woman named Clara, who lived next door, passed away after a long battle with illness. She was beloved in our neighborhood, and the kids often gathered to hear her stories.

Later that evening, my sister and I rented a movie. We invited our friend Leo, who frequently visited us. We planned to start watching the film at eight o’clock. By twenty past, we were getting anxious; Leo hadn’t arrived yet.

Almost an hour later, the door swung open, and Leo walked in, looking slightly out of breath. He apologized, explaining that he had taken a shortcut through Clara’s garden. While crossing her yard, he saw her sitting on a bench under her favorite tree. Curious, he stopped to talk to her.

Leo shared that Clara had told him she was going on a journey and wouldn’t be around anymore. It was a strange conversation, as she seemed so vibrant, yet there was a sense of finality in her words. After that, Leo joined us, and we finally settled down to watch our movie, but the encounter lingered in my mind.

That night, I couldn’t shake off the feeling that Clara had said goodbye in her own way. As we watched the film, I pondered over the connection we share with those around us, and how sometimes, even in their departure, they leave us with something to remember them by.
