An old house with a dark past

When I was just a toddler, my mother and I lived with my grandmother in an old house with a dark past. In the late 1950s, a man had gone mad and murdered his entire family—his wife, two sons, and a young daughter. Their bodies were discovered in a small, sealed-off cellar in the basement.

One day, my mother and I left for a doctor’s appointment without telling my grandmother. She was in the basement doing laundry when we left. As she climbed the stairs, she saw a little girl about my age sitting at the top. Assuming it was me, she heard the girl ask for a glass of water. My grandmother fetched the water and was heading back to the basement door when the doorbell rang. She placed the glass on the dining room table and went to answer the door.

To her surprise, it was my mother and me at the door. My mom had forgotten something and had come back. Shocked, my grandmother asked how I could have been with my mother the whole time when she had just seen me in the basement. My mom confirmed that I had been with her and hadn’t been home. My grandmother recounted the strange encounter and led my mother to where the girl had been sitting. The glass of water was still there, but the water was gone.

From that day on, my grandmother was convinced that the spirit of the murdered girl was still in the house. The eerie feeling never left, and strange occurrences continued to happen. Objects would move on their own, and sometimes, faint whispers could be heard in the dead of night.

Eventually, we moved out of that house, but the memory of that ghostly encounter stayed with us. Even now, whenever we talk about it, a chill runs down our spines.
