A Friend’s Concern

As I sorted through my belongings, my roommate Mia walked in. We had shared the same apartment for three years, attending different colleges. Mia was usually cheerful, but today she seemed downcast. I inquired about her mood, but she waved it off, claiming she was just fatigued. Not wanting to pry, I let her be while I finished packing. She lay back on her bed, eyes closed.

Once I was done, I said my goodbyes. Mia stood up, enveloping me in a warm hug, urging me to take care of myself. I smiled and reminded her to reach out if she ever wanted to talk.

Heading home for the weekend was a routine I had grown accustomed to. But as I traveled, Mia lingered in my thoughts. Upon arriving at home, I felt a sudden urge to call her, but my attempts went unanswered. A sense of unease crept in. I shared my concerns with my mom, who suggested that Mia might simply be sleeping or had a dead phone. I tried to shake off my worries, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.

Later that evening, just after dinner, my phone rang. It was Mia. Relief washed over me as I answered, expressing my concern for her wellbeing.
