Years before I was born, my mom and half-sister experienced something unforgettable. To understand just how chilling this was, you need to know a bit about our family’s land. We live on 85 acres, surrounded by other branches of our family, totaling about 160 acres. My grandparents lived next door and had built a playhouse for the grandkids in their backyard.
One night, my mom and sister were home alone. My sister, who was about 13 at the time, had a friend over. They asked to play in the playhouse, and my mom said it was fine.
Around 8:30 PM, my mom was sitting in the living room when she heard an unnerving sound. It was a loud, god-awful laugh, like the most evil witch’s cackle you can imagine, but amplified threefold. It sounded as though it was in the room with her.
Suddenly, my sister and her friend burst through the door, screaming at the top of their lungs, their faces pale with fear. My mom asked what was wrong, and they explained that they had heard the same evil laughter inside the playhouse.
The playhouse is about 50 yards from my parents’ house, so how could both my mom and the girls have heard the laughter as if it were in the same rooms as them, when they were so far apart?
To this day, my mom doesn’t like telling this story, but she will. It’s been over 30 years, and neither she nor my sister has changed a single detail. The conviction in their voices remains strong.
Interestingly, our land was once inhabited by the Congaree Natives. We’ve found arrowheads and pottery shards in the woods, which makes us wonder if their presence has something to do with the paranormal activity at my parents’ house.
